Addo's 12 remaining elephants
Hunting for ivory started in the early 1700s and by 1900 most of the remaining Addo wildlife were completely exterminated. Only 12 Addo elephants remained before the Addo Elephant National Park was proclaimed in 1931, with an area size of 2000 hectares.
The Addo elephant number has grown since and now has over 700 elephants. The elephant that you will see in the Addo are the descendants of the herds of elephants that once freely roamed the eastern and southern cape.

The Addo elephants are wild about oranges - and any other citrus fruits. With an excellent sense of smell, pachyderms can sniff citrus fragrances from a great distance. What’s more, the elephants find it difficult to resist.
